{"id":1783,"date":"2020-02-28T14:28:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-28T14:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/ai-and-data-privacy-whats-the-answer\/"},"modified":"2024-01-18T14:41:37","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T14:41:37","slug":"ai-and-data-privacy-whats-the-answer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/insights\/glossary\/ai-and-data-privacy-whats-the-answer\/","title":{"rendered":"AI and Data Privacy \u2013 what\u2019s the answer?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We mentioned as long ago as June last year, in our third update of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/insights\/blog\/the-data-privacy-periodic-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Periodic Table<\/a>, that the conversation surrounding AI and Privacy had already gained serious momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, it seems that that momentum is unstoppable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Dec 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dec 2019:&nbsp;The&nbsp;European Commission\u2019s new president, Ursula von der&nbsp;Leyen,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/news\/3084456\/european-commissions-new-president-promises-gdpr-style-legislation-on-ai\">pledges&nbsp;GDPR-style<\/a> legislation&nbsp;to govern the&nbsp;\u201chuman and ethical\u201d implications&nbsp;of&nbsp;personal data in&nbsp;AI&nbsp;applications&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Dec 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dec 2019:&nbsp;The&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/news\/3084425\/ico-organisations-using-ai-systems-must-provide-clear-explanations-of-decisions-made\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK\u2019s&nbsp;ICO&nbsp;releases a first draft of regulatory guidance on the use of AI<\/a>, particularly demanding that&nbsp;clear explanations of&nbsp;how&nbsp;decisions made&nbsp;are made available&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Dec 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>World Economic Forum, Davos,&nbsp;Jan 2020:&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/01\/21\/the-us-needs-a-national-privacy-law-for-personal-data-salesforce-co-ceo-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Salesforce calls for&nbsp;a national&nbsp;US&nbsp;privacy law for personal data<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;Satya Nadella&nbsp;asserts that data and privacy be considered a&nbsp;human rights&nbsp;under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uk.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/microsoft-ceo-data-privacy-must-be-thought-of-as-a-human-right-world-economic-forum-2020-in-davos-110731615.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cdata dignity\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;\u2013 both of which reflected privacy being a major theme at Davos, second&nbsp;only to climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conversation has now reached critical mass. These are some of the most notable industry bodies and regulators, plus some of the most powerful technology leaders on the planet \u2013 some speaking from arguably the most influential global platform at Davos \u2013 all encouraging business and regulators to reach the same conclusion and act more responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, the need for tighter links between privacy and AI is more than industry wishful thinking or empty philosophising. It\u2019s a real and tangible need even a requirement. But rather like much of the conversation threads revolving around AI, the businesses we talk to find that there is plenty of discussion and debate about how to make AI projects privacy-sensitive, but little practical guidance for how to achieve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is because most businesses we encounter are searching for the wrong \u2013 and arguably an impossible \u2013 solution. They are considering rolling out AI projects, and looking for how to make their pre-ordained plan adhere to data privacy and ethics. But retrofitting privacy into data-driven projects is almost impossible to do without either curtailing the projects\u2019 performance and restricting its value, or without only achieving partial privacy adherence. Instead, they should be looking for how to create a privacy-centric business and data culture, and then consider what applications \u2013 AI or otherwise \u2013 they can apply on top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBusinesses are thinking about it the wrong way around: \u201cI want to implement AI, so I had better ensure my AI project adheres to my privacy obligations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, they should think of it as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI have obligations to ensure continuous adherence to data privacy requirements. If this is achieved, I then give myself and the business the confidence to roll out an AI project \u2013 and potentially many more data-driven initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer&nbsp;to the above&nbsp;is Privacy by Design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Privacy by Design&nbsp;is a&nbsp;strategic approach&nbsp;that&nbsp;requires&nbsp;any&nbsp;interaction&nbsp;with personal data to be performed with&nbsp;data protection and privacy in mind at every step.\u202fSuch&nbsp;initiatives give businesses&nbsp;the most granular understanding and control of&nbsp;their&nbsp;data. Far more so than&nbsp;generic&nbsp;data governance programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the finite control that Privacy by Design offers brings enormous possibilities. Because your data becomes so well structured, so visible, with such oversight, and with such a firm ethical and regulatory grounding, you can be totally confident in your authority to use it and overlay almost any application you choose for whatever end is deemed necessary for your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, those applications will sit in the analytics, insights and automation camps.
