You might not even know your organization is stuck in it &#8211; the company might still be acting on gut feel as opposed to relying on data, the data you have might be ungoverned and inaccurate, or you\u2019re waiting weeks, even months, for your teams to glean useful insights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019re not alone. Data leaders like yourself keep falling into the data ditch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s begin to unpick and discover how you and your peers got stuck in the data ditch in the first place, and more importantly, how you can climb out\u2026<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Data Ditch inception\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>We didn\u2019t go looking for the data ditch; it found us. In our recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/insights\/blog\/the-data-maturity-impact-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Maturity Impact Report<\/a>, we noticed something unusual. We interviewed 500+ SMEs and enterprise companies and, as well as assessing them ourselves, we asked them to assess their own data maturity against eight separate pillars:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Ethics<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Maturity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT Architecture\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT Security<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Privacy by Design (PbD)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaboration\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IT Cost Management\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Insights\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span>We then asked the companies questions to match up the pillars to where they were in their data maturity stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 1. No concept of using data\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 2. Underappreciative of data value<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 3: Basic use of data but is inconsistent<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 4: Data is securely available but not fully governed or relied on<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 5: Depend on data and understand its value<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stage 6: Data is at the core of the business and used strategically\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>Here\u2019s where it got interesting&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4039 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Data-Ditch-Graph_Data_Maturity-300x115.png\" alt=\"Data Maturity Impact Report - Graph\" width=\"1179\" height=\"452\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>Businesses investing in data maturity, but implementing poorly, will fall into the data ditch. They\u2019re better off doing nothing\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>I\u2019ve observed that most people have an inflated sense of where they fall on this spectrum, especially if they weren\u2019t mindful about how they were moving along the stages,<\/em>\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/about-us\/leadership\/tessa-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tessa Jones<\/a>, our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VP of Data Science Research &amp; Development<\/span><b><i>. <\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>Demand is coming in but the company lacks the infrastructure to support it. There\u2019s no clear vision of how to deliver. The frustration begins to mount.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This happens because in stages 1 and 2, there\u2019s excitement, drive and buzz around data maturity, but in stages 3 and 4, the trough of disillusionment hits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why are people so far off the mark?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no ulterior motive behind why people are misjudging where their company is. It\u2019s the essential human trait: aspiration. As Tessa Jones puts it: \u201c<em>If you haven\u2019t lived in a stage 6 environment, you\u2019ll think where you are is how far you can go<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Put simply: it\u2019s perception versus reality &#8211; we don\u2019t know what we don\u2019t know.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4051  aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.calligo.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Data-Maturity-Impact-Report-self-assessed-vs-assessed-level-300x157.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"873\" height=\"457\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the data ditch actually mean?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ditch is especially dangerous as profitability, productivity, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everything<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> drops in stages 3 and 4. <\/span><b>On paper, it would look like the project is failing, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to Tessa Jones:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>I\u2019ve observed the red flags flying in earnest: you\u2019re worse off than when you started. You\u2019ve invested significant money and resources but haven\u2019t yet realized the full potential which will lead to reduced costs, reduced risk and increased revenue. It gets darkest before the dawn, and dawn in this case is the ascending line of profitability, productivity, employee retention, customer satisfaction in stages 5 and 6. In my opinion, the data ditch is the embodiment that it gets worse before it gets better. But, if you persevere in the right way, it <\/em><\/span><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em> get better.<\/em>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to dodge the ditch\u2026<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As humans we\u2019ve got very good at collecting data but it\u2019s a whole other beast to know what we then do with it. Often, people seem to be drowning in the very data which could set them (and their insights) free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<em>My key questions are how do you distill this data into something meaningful and useful<\/em>?\u201d adds our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data Science Research &amp; Development<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> VP. \u201c<em>How do you simultaneously build the infrastructure underneath it to support your changing objectives? There\u2019s a lot to juggle. There\u2019s not even a broad-stroke answer for setting up your organization structure to beat the data ditch. I\u2019ve seen companies with matrix, hub and spoke, and data pods all have issues with the data ditch<\/em>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The one tool you can use to overcome the data ditch might have some rolling their eyes: a robust data strategy. Let\u2019s break it down\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a robust data strategy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Building a thorough data strategy was the one thing companies had in common when it came to beating the data ditch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Your data strategy should move through planning, execution and financial backing. It\u2019s more likely to be effective if you incorporate these pillars from the outset:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Data Ethics<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Data Governance<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Data Insights<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Privacy by Design\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Between these pillars, you\u2019ll move more consciously through the data maturity stages and be braced to encounter and overcome the data ditch when it happens.
